Timeless style + panache

I had the privilege of meeting Barbara Louis and visiting her amazing apartment many moons ago. In the video below, she gives Stylelikeu a tour of her closets. Along the way, she bestows some great wisdom - Mix old with new, high-end with Zara! Dress for your mood and imagination! Highlight your best assets! And don't forget the long-term effects of very large, heavy earrings!

Soaring back from NYC

I had the pleasure of spending the weekend in NYC with some of my favorite people, doing some of my favorite things - putzing through art galleries, taking walks, eating delicious meals, dancing and talking.

E.M. told me that Maira Kalman, my favorite artist since childhood, was having a show at The Jewish Museum. We had to go! I've never seen her work in-person, and - at the risk of sounding a little crazy - it was something that I'll remember forever and ever. If in New York, you must see it. If you can bring a child along, all the better!

Then there were so many great conversations with my wise and hilarious girlfriends, had over meals and walks ...

"And then my mother said, 'It's not about what you have. It's about the life you have.' You know, she can be so insane and irritating, but she's so right about that!" [laughing] - anonymous

Tiny sweet potato biscuits, champagne with grapefruit juice, baked eggs with avocado, crushed tomato, manchego cheese and toast. Marvin Gaye and Lauren Hill in the background.

Manicures at Ten Over Ten
112 Reade Street

A lovely, serene spot that carries posh nail polish lines like NARS and Chanel. They even provide ipads and crisp fashion mags, but without pomp and circumstance or insane prices.

And, of course, fashion fashion everywhere! (These heels from Aldo! )

To the beautiful ladies in NYC that made this weekend so special. OM who has the most fabulous eye for style and will make you laugh until your stomach hurts. EM, who is such a cheerleader for others' dreams and smart as can be. To MB, who will dance like crazy and get everyone else in the place dancing too. And to MQ, who always thinks before she speaks and has seen me through so many chapters. Oh, the places we'll go, ladies!

A necklace to die for

My friend J has started a new blog, Dahlia Lynn Lane, to chronicle her jewelry creations and talent for style. She modeled this piece at a wedding recently, and I swooned. Faceted stones + rhinestones + turquoise?!? It's an electric design worthy of Cleopatra or Beyonce, but J demonstrates here that it works well in "real life" - dressed up or down.

Visit her site. Buy her jewelry.

Collective fashion consciousness

In need of some fashion inspiration? A dare to try something different, funk it up or feel young this Spring?

Check out LOOKBOOK.nu. It's a fashion show of sorts. Young, beautiful people from around the world strike poses and post their outfits. It's style experimentation at its finest. A great source for inspiration and the courage to try something new...

I need to credit all these ladies, but that may have to wait until tomorrow. (It's quite late.) For now, see if you like outfits from a particular country or region more than others. I learned a lot and gravitated towards fashionistas like this!

Wednesday is the new Friday

Great image taken of DJ SoulCall Paul's table tonight at The Gibson. Danny Harris' "At Home on the Playa" opening, curated by The Dunes. Harris is also the creator of People's District, a fantastic local story telling blog.

Matchmaker

You know how couples sometimes love to set up their friends? ... "He's just such a great guy! I mean, if I were single, I'd totally date him." ... Well, today I'm playing matchmaker! I, renter of a fully decorated apartment, want to set a lucky guy up with this file cabinet from Miss Pixies. I'm not in the market for a dresser. But, if I were, I'd be ALL OVER this one.

I'm in love with it, particularly as a dresser in a guy's place. It's got giant drawers, is a perfect height and even has an awesome, hidden writing shelf. Very 007.

Mint condition. $110 or $140 with delivery. Dressers like this don't come around every day.
