Michelle Obama in McQueen

In Washington, even the First Lady's wardrobe choices are political. Everyone expected Michelle to wear an Asian-American designer to the state dinner with Chinese President Hu Jintao. Instead, Ms. Obama chose a striking red petal print gown by the late Alexander McQueen. It was strong, feminine and suited her height and stature perfectly.

And just in case someone should raise an eyebrow about the designer pick, it should be said that red symbolizes good luck in Chinese culture. Now that's political pivoting!
